How to get to my place.

My Home town of Barnsley

Until the mid 1980's Barnsley was a thriving coal mining town known as the "Coal Capitol of England" Following the devastating Miner's strike of 1984-5, the wrath of the Harridan from Grantham ensured that the town is almost dead on its feet. The closure of the coal industry destroyed virtually all the other industrys in the town as most were dependent on it, foundries, fabrication shops and engineers have all fallen. The skilled men who worked for them are now approaching retirement and no one has taken their place.

Industries perhaps understandably fear to set up in the heartland of what famous radio reporter Alistair Cooke once called "The Storm Troopers of the British Trade Union Movement" in his famous "Letter from America" A proud name perhaps and in its time, well deserved.

Some new industries have come into the area, these tend to be low skills, minimum wage, non-union and predominantly for women. A few years ago a small company advertised for around ten bakehouse staff, they were inundated with over 5,000 applicants. We are told that nobody should expect a job for life nowadays but should it have come to this?
