Short Wave Radio and Scanning

radios

Various scanners, PMR446 handhelds and transceivers

I got into Short Wave following a brief, very brief spell with CB in the early 1980's. Too much effing and blinding - I can use it with the best AND DO! but in the right place.

The purchase of a communications receiver opened a complete new world for me. Voice of America, Radio Moscow and Radio Berlin International etc. showed what can be heard from the "Horse's Mouth" although the examples given were Democracy v Communism, a bit wearing after a while. The world of Amateur Radio beckoned and with a mate attended the local Radio club. We exited swiftly as the sniffy Amateurs would not speak to us - we sub-humans had no license you see. Their loss not ours.

If only I had the money - the ICOM R9000. When I win the lottery maybe.

Scanning is a fairly recent phenomenon, probably starting from the listeners using small hand held receivers at Air Shows etc. The airways are full of radio traffic, the majority of which is supposedly strictly illegal to tune into. Very hard to police though and so as long as a person does not act upon anything heard, nowt is done about it.

For the technically minded, my station consists of: -

  • YAESU FRG 7700 communications receiveryaesu
  • Global AT-1000 antenna tuning unitatu
  • multi mode tunable DSP filternotch filter
  • AOR AR2000 wide range monitor receiver scanner
  • I have a pair of these GPMR446 handie talkies, for use about the house and garden. They look like toys but believe me they work perfectly.

  • Antennas
  • Random long wire for High Frequency - simply as long and as high a wire I can get.
  • Active antenna for H.F.
  • Double discone for VHF/UHF
  • AOR LA350 Short Wave Active Loop antenna

    Computers

The interest in computers grew from shortwave radio where I wanted to decode the staccato sounds of Morse Code and the even more strange burblings of RTTY, this being similar to sound heard when a fax is sent. As a true Yorkshireman I had no intentions of paying the daft sums asked for decoding programs and so embarked on using computers to do the biz. I do not claim to be an expert but also, I'm no teacake, hence, my own web site

Inspection of the internal decor of licensed premises

    I think this is self-explanatory, don't you?
