Lever is an uncommon name this side of the Pennines, much
more common in Lancashire which gives some credence to the family
tradition that my Great Grandad and his older lads walked over the Pennines to get work in the local mines. My Grandad,
Percy always had us believe he was related to
Lord Leverhulme of Sunlight Soap fame until I asked him "How come tha worked darn't pit for 50 years then".
Growing up in the boom years of Barnsley, I had a happy childhood, it snowed every year and stopped for weeks on end, dint rain much in summer and when it did we were at Blackpool (Barnsley used to emigrate there every Barnsley Feast week, third week in August when I was a kid)
Passed my
eleven plus and went to a old and honourable school with no gym, no playing
fields, no showers etc - my brother had all these at his Secondary Modern - so
we had to leave our clothes in heaps in the toilets when doing games only to
find we had been robbed when we returned BUT for the honour of the school kept
our gobs shut. Left ASAP at fifteen and started an apprenticeship at the area
workshops of the National Coal Board.
I recently started volunteer work at the Roundhouse Neighbourhood Learning Net, this involves taking out posters and leaflet drops etc to the various community outlets, such as schools, sports centres and local businesses. These tend to be short adult education courses but some quite long ones, my wife is taking a course in British Sign Language that is a full year. I am about half way through the European Computer Driving License (to add to the other qualifications nobody wants!)
